How to Convert a Garden Bed into a Sandbox

How to convert a garden bed into a sandbox

When we decided to convert our garden bed into a sandbox, I googled for tips. There are many blog posts about turning a sandbox into a garden bed, but nothing about the reverse. Doesn’t anyone have toddlers out there that don’t have time to garden anymore?

If you are saying, “me, me!” then I can help. The following is a step by step guide to help you convert your garden bed into a sandbox.

First, gather everything you need:

  • Shovel
  • Weed barrier
  • Staple gun
  • Hammer
  • Staple remover
  • Scissors
  • Lots and lots of play sand
  • Sand toys
  1. Shovel out soil until you reach the original weed barrier. This does not have to be perfect. Our original weed barrier is at least ten years old so it is not all in-tact. I could generally tell if I had broke the barrier and was shoveling beneath it.
  2. Hammer any loose nails, and remove any old staples.
  3. Place a new weed barrier over the old weed barrier. It should not be taut, and can be placed very loosely on-top of the old soil and weed barrier.
  4. Staple the weed barrier into the wood frame at the top of the soil.
  5. Use the scissors to cut the weed barrier at the top of the staples.
  6. This calculator will help you figure out how much play sand you will need. I wish I had known about this before we took three trips to Home Depot.
  7. Dump the sand in, and even it out.
  8. Now you can remove the staples since the weight of the sand will hold down the weed barrier.
  9. Get sand toys and enjoy!

The kids have been so enthralled with this whole process. They helped me shovel and dig out all the worms. Now that it is complete, all they want to do is play in the sandbox. It’s almost like babysitting. Everyone is truly happy about the new addition to the backyard.
